Students came prepared to share pieces of themselves as the crowd witnessed an enchanting love poem, a student revealing difficult lessons learned, a musical performance and the host’s mini comic at Montgomery College TPSS campus’ first Slam Poetry event, Wednesday Oct. 11.

With dull lighting, a dozen people and what looked like a two feet stage in the cafeteria of the Charlene R. Nunley Student Services Center, the show began.

“It allows people to share their art,” Hanan said, who helped create the event.

Every person came on stage with their own energy flourishing through the crowd. The small size of the crowd did not discourage the performers. Some consistently came up, audience members and coordinators of the event alike.

Open seating was allowed and students who walked by had the opportunity to sit and watch.

A sense of unity was held as support from family and friends carried the night.

Participants performed poems that were either their own, others in the crowd or of someone they admired. Even the host’s mother had shared a few words.

Those who had poems in the audience but did not want to share them personally, had the option of handing in their poems to be shared by someone in the event.

“Events like this make the college more of a community, especially outside of the classroom,” Rashani, Senator at Large of the Student Senate, creator and host of the event, said.

With this being the initial start, they hope to see the audience grow.

The event was created through a collaboration of MC’s Student Senate of Activities and Spoken From the Soul. It was an event made to provide an open platform for all different perspectives of students on campus, according to Rashani.
