Walk for Peace Concludes at Lincoln Memorial

Many Buddhist monks arrive at the Lincoln Memorial with flowers and small gifts from supporters during the Peace Walk ceremony.

 

Buddhist monks and nuns from various traditions gathered at the Lincoln Memorial on February 11, 2026, to mark the end of the 2026 Walk for Peace. This 120-day, 2,300-mile journey aimed to promote peace, mindfulness, and compassion. People watched as the monks, wearing saffron robes, walked quietly and carried flowers, gifts, and personal items they had gathered along the way. Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara led the group, joined by Aloka, the peace dog. The ceremony included prayers, meditation, and songs for peace and unity.

Shirley Nan Washington, Ed.D., a lifelong learner and Workforce Development and Continuing Education student, is a six-time graduate of Montgomery College (with honors, 4.0).  She is a member of four honor societies and recipient of two academic awards from Montgomery College. She has had photographic and art pieces displayed in Student Art Exhibitions and images published in the Sligo Journal of Arts and Letters, with two of her photographic images published in the Journal’s spring edition 2024. In addition, her landscape photographic image placed second in the Excalibur’s Spring 2023 Photo Contest.  She joined the Excalibur in Fall 2023 to share her love for photojournalism with the TP/SS campus community. She has self-published three books of her photography.
