“One County, Many Immigrants” Lecture by Steven V. Roberts
On March 6, the first public lecture sponsored by the new National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) occurred. Steven V. Roberts, Professor of Media and Public Affairs from George Washington University, visited Montgomery College speaking about the diversity of Montgomery County. Roberts spoke about many individuals from many backgrounds and cultures that positively changed their communities. Immigrants have helped communities by farming and planting to create produce. Also, they have created technology to communicate with other people around the world.
“America is a melting pot of individuals of many backgrounds and how immigrants cultivate and dedicate their lives to helping others”.
Throughout his speech, Roberts discusses the history of immigration. How immigrants in the past have been mistreated, the reason behind their travel to America -to seek asylum in most cases-, and how they have faced discrimination and racism.
Roberts eventually answered questions from students and faculty discussing the many issues immigrants face today. What are ways to fight back against the negativity and bigotry immigrants face? Are immigrants stealing the jobs of American people? How is the status of Immigration throughout other countries? Many students and faculty debated with Roberts about these many issues and responded with helpful feedback.
“History repeats itself. We will continue to see many people from different backgrounds be attacked by bigotry, ignorance, and discrimination. However, we as a nation will always triumph over those who bring negativity and change America in a productive way,” Roberts said.
