Earlier this semester, the Student Health and Wellness Center held the debut of their Mobile Market service for the Fall 2023 semester in line with their purpose to provide health and wellness services that aim to aid student’s well-being. Another service that the SHaW (Student Health and Wellness) Center offers is Food Banks.
Effie Odhiambo, a General Studies: Social Sciences, Administration and Health Core student said she enjoyed the accessibility of the Food Banks and pantries on campus. The pantries are available on campus in the Commons, Pavillion 4, and the Student Services Center.
“After I used the service, I have taken to telling my friends and anyone that needs support to visit the SHaW Center,” said Odhiambo.
Daniel Korobtchenko, a Peer Navigator for the SHaW Center said that the center does not just empower students to do their best, it empowers those who work there as well.
“One of my favorite parts of working at the SHaW Center is being able to help new students adjust to campus life,” said Korobtchenko. “I like explaining the SHaW Center’s purpose to any students needing support. Working at the SHaW Center will allow anyone to feel more accomplished and more confident in who they are.”
Angela Dawson, Program Coordinator at the SHaW Center said that the Mobile Market is one of the SHaW Center’s most popular events at Montgomery College. One of the events she wanted more students to attend more often is the Personal Safety Education and mental and physical wellness events.
“We aim to support student’s wellness and give them a place to feel listened to, cared for, and given proper direction when lost,” Dawson said.
The SHaW Center hosted a Mobile Market on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus in September. It provides fresh produce and canned non-perishable goods to MC students and the community.
Sergio Washington, the former Student Affairs Initiative Program Manager spoke about the Mobile Market and how it impacts the community.
“My favorite part of the Mobile Market is seeing people smile,” Washington said.
There was a small number of volunteers helping that day, but all students are welcome to volunteer. Volunteering with the SHaW Center can make students eligible for service hours.
